BBQ Sloppy Joes on the Traeger

Flavorful, meaty and with a hint of sweet from the BBQ sauce, this recipe for Sloppy Joes cooked on the Traeger are the ultimate comfort food from your childhood with a backyard twist.

Equipment

  • Traeger grill
  • Lodge cast iron skillet

Ingredients
  

  • 1 bottle of Head Country BBQ Sauce- we used the Original variation
  • Head Country sweet & spicy seasoning
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small can of tomato sauce
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 sweet white onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup shredded white cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup crispy green chilis for topping- we use these!

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the Traeger grill to 450*
  • Place a cast iron pan in the grill to get very hot while you prep the other ingredients
  • Finely chop the onion and red bell pepper and press the garlic
  • In the hot pan, melt half of the butter and saute the onion, pepper and garlic until translucent
  • Add the ground beef to the pan, sprinkle with seasoning and cook until brown on one side
  • Using a spatula or spoon, break up the meat and continue cooking until brown all over
  • Drain the meat on paper towels and return to the pan
  • Add the sauce ingredients– BBQ sauce, tomato sauce and seasonings
  • sCombine the meat and sauce and close the grilll and simmer the mixture for an additional 10 minutes or so
  • Let sauce reduce and thicken, continuing to stir the meat mixture until cooked through
  • Toast the buns by brushing the insides with melted butter
  • When toasted, sprinkle with garlic powder
  • Assemble the sandwiches: several spoonfuls of meat on the bottom bun, lots of shredded cheese, then topped with chile crisps
  • Put the top bun on the sandwich and serve hot!

Notes

For this recipe, we used the Traeger Ranger grill. But if you crank up the heat on any Traeger model, you can create the same results!
